SEO – The Process Explained

ROUND 1

  • The first task is to do some Market Research – this is a vital step in providing effective search engine optimization and its importance should never be underestimated. Using tools like WordTracker and the Google Adwords keywords tool, research the best keywords and key phrases in addition to doing some competitive research.
  • You then align those keywords with your pages and perhaps even the domain name, to make your site as keyword rich as possible.
  • Next you optimize the text content on your pages for our target keywords, making sure that the keywords and phrases are used in context and are grammatically correct. It doesn’t do to just dump keywords willy-nilly onto a page.
  • Building good incoming links is another very important step. Its a good idea to start with getting friends and associates to link to your site using the correct linking text. Free online Directories are another very good source of incoming links – do avoid link farms though since those can have a negative impact.
  • Now you submit the site and your sitemap to the search engines using Webmaster Tools and wait – search engines take time to index links and build trust, especially if your site is the new kid on the block.\

Over the next few months your site’s rankings should improve, sending more traffic your way, but your job’s not yet done – you will probably need yet another round of optimization before you start seeing satisfying results. Remember, SEO is a marathon and not a sprint. Its not a one-shot deal but a process which you have to maintain patiently, tweaking settings along the way.

ROUND 2

  • Here’s where you review your results to see what’s working well and what’s not, reshaping your strategy using analytics, tracking rankings and traffic reports. Another round of market research – or more precisely market feedback may be called for.
  • This could lead to possibly restructuring the site and adding or modifying the text content based on your findings.
  • You then add additional keyword modifiers on the various pages.
  • Now review your branding, address public relations issues using Press Releases, article marketing and make use of social networking to increase inbound links and traffic.
  • You keep building momentum and value, adding more and more content while you continue to monitor your progress.
  • And now, hopefully you should see the results you’ve been striving for.

Remember, SEO is dependent not just on your own efforts but also on how hard your competition is trying to do the same thing – It is also dependent on new variables being continually introduced by Google and other engines, which we have no control over. This is why its unrealistic for SEO companies to give “guarantees” unless they are involved in some black hat scheme – which is something you definitely want to avoid if you don’t want to get blacklisted by the Search engines.

IN CONCLUSION:

Once again, keep in mind that good SEO is a process, not an event, which is why it is not cheap. Don’t fall into the trap of paying an exorbitant amount as a “one-time” fee but rather invest wisely over the long-term on a month-to-month basis according to your marketing budget.

Make sure you clarify to your service provider as to what results you expect to see for your investment and ask them to advise you upfront as to whether your expectations are realistic in relation to your budget – this will avoid ruining what should be a mutually profitable partnership.
